Mariah Carey team: Here's what really happened - Entertainment Weekly

Mariah Carey team: Here's what really happened - Entertainment Weekly

Mariah Carey’s team is fed up with feeling attacked and is ready to candidly elaborate on what exactly happened during the singer’s infamous performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Below Carey’s manager Stella Bulochnikov, who was by the singer’s side at the event, runs through what went down Saturday in detail to try and clear up the conflicting accounts about the ABC performance — which was marred by the singer’s audio issues. Over the past couple days, the singer has been accused of lip-syncing and even skipping the show’s rehearsal. Producer Dick Clark Productions has slammed any insinuation that they’re to blame for the fiasco as “absurd” (see their statement here), but here’s Bulochnikov with her recollection of the events.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So first, let’s talk about the rehearsal. There are anonymous production sources quoted as saying Carey skipped it?
Stella Bulochnikov
: Not true. Not only did she not ditch rehearsal, we got to Times Square at 2:30. They weren’t ready for her until 3:20. We waited around for their stage manager. We had the stage from 3:20 to 3:50. She had a dance stand-in for the musical number. She sat on the side of the stage with her ear-pack and her in-ears and her microphone to make sure she could do the sound check. The most important thing to her was the sound. The sound was coming in choppy. She was assured it would work by the evening.

She did an interview with Ryan Seacrest at about 10:35 where her in-ear was very choppy. She could barely hear Ryan. She was struggling to hear him through the noise of Times Square.

We then went to [producer] Mark Shimmel’s assigned talent executive to Mariah. And I said, “Her in-ears do not work, it’s choppy, we need new ears for the performance.” She said, “Those are not the ears she’ll be working with for the performance. The ears she will be working with are in the trailer.” We went to the trailer at 10:45. She did touch-ups because she’s supposed to go on at 11:38. We put in the ears and did the mic pack. We walked to the holding tent about 11:20. We told both stage managers — remember this is not our production team, we’re out-sourcing our team which we never do — we told them the mic pack is not working. She can’t hear it, it’s faint. They brought her a new one, and that one didn’t work either, the mic pack was dead. They changed the battery pack. She said she still couldn’t hear. The second stage manager said, “It doesn’t work here in the tent, it will work on the stage.” She said, “Great, let’s go to the stage.”

It’s now four minutes to showtime. She says, “I hear nothing in my ears, my ears are dead.” The other stage manager says, “It will work right when we go live.” Then things start to get chaotic. They start counting her down — four minutes, three minutes. Mariah: “I can’t hear.” Them: “You’re gonna hear when it goes live — two minutes!”

So, right when it goes live, she can’t hear anything. The ears are dead. They’re dead. So she pulls them out of the ear because if the artist keeps them in their ears then all she hears is silence. Once she pulled them off her ear she was hoping to hear her music, but because of the circumstances — there’s noise from Times Square and the music is reverberating from the buildings — all she hears is chaos. She can’t hear her music. It’s a madhouse. At the point, there’s no way to recover.

On the third song when she could hear her track playing it was so bad she said, “F— it, I’ve had enough.”

Was there an attempt from her team to get her off the stage earlier? At one point one of her backup dancers seemed to motion her to get off the stage.
She should have walked off and thrown the mic at somebody’s head — that would have been a great moment. After the show, I called Mark Shimmel — who begged her to do the show and had her cut her vacation short from Aspen. This is a verbatim conversation. I asked, “What happened?” He said, “I just talked to my guys and I confirmed her in-ears didn’t work. Couldn’t she just wing it?” I’m like, “What are you talking about ‘winging it’? Are you on glue?” He’s like, “What do you want me to do?” I said, “I want you to cut the West Coast feed.” He calls me back and says, “We can’t do it.” So I’m like, “You would prefer to air a show with technical glitches so you can have a viral moment rather than protect the integrity of your show and Dick Clark Productions?” He said, “We just won’t do it. Do you want to do a joint statement?” And I said, “No, I want you to go f— yourself.” And that was it. I don’t think it was an unfair ask to ask them to cut [the segment from] the West Coast feed after they had this huge mechanical glitch.

What happened with Carey after she left the stage?
She was gracious enough to walk over to Seacrest and do the ball-drop moment and then she left.

How’s she feeling today about all this?
She’s just ignoring it. She’s got so many more important things to do. And this goes under the heading of “no good deed” because she was doing them a favor. Shimmel’s direct request was, “I’m begging you to do this. America needs this moment after Donald Trump, etc.” What a bunch of nonsense.

I can understand the frustration there if they knew her audio wasn’t working and then sent her out live on stage anyway.
But even when it didn’t work [when live], when she pulled her ears out, they should have cut to commercial. That says to me they wanted a viral moment at any expense. And that’s not a company with integrity for 50-something years. That’s not who Dick Clark was. He loved artists.

Fans are also accusing her of lip-syncing. From watching the video, it looked like part of the performance was meant to be lip-synced and part of it wasn’t?
No. It’s not lip-syncing. Lip-syncing is when people don’t sing at all. This is what people should understand. Every artist sings to a track, especially in circumstances like that when it’s really loud and impossible to have a great musical performance. You’re not singing at the Philharmonic. Every artist who goes out there sings to tracks. What Mariah was doing was singing to tracks. What you heard on the second song, “Emotions,” was her going to sing it live. That’s why you heard no vocals. It’s a song she sings every other day.

At least they are acknowledging there was a technical problem, though?
But to not apologize to her formally? That’s disgusting. We live in this viral world where anybody will do anything for a viral moment.

Dick Clark Productions didn’t have any immediate additional comment. This article has been updated since it was first published.

Dozens of new laws take effect in Ohio — here are some that may impact you - fox8.com

OHIO -- State lawmakers were very busy in Ohio last year. Just in the past month, they've passed more than 50 new laws.

They affect anything from minimum wage and abortion to how you keep your chickens and drive around bikes.

Here's a list of many of those bills that will go into effect in 2017:

Education
Senate Bill 3: Local schools now don't have to get state education approval about how they make up snow days.
House Bill 410: Students can no longer be expelled or suspended for missing an excessive number of school days.

Health
Senate Bill 127: This bill prohibits abortion when gestational age is 20 weeks or more.

Firearms
Senate Bill 199: This bill allows Ohioans to now carry concealed firearms in places like daycare centers, public areas of airports and in school safety zones. It gives colleges and universities the authority to allow weapons on their campuses. Privately-owned businesses can still issue bans in their facilities. Ohioans will also be able to keep their guns in their cars, regardless of the location of the vehicle.

Minimum wage
Senate Bill 331: This bill prohibits political subdivisions from establishing minimum wage rates different from the rate required by state law. The state minimum wage will increase by 5 cents to adjust for inflation. Officials say non-tipped workers must be paid an hourly wage of at least $8.15 beginning Jan. 1, 2017. Tipped workers are slated to receive a minimum of $4.08 an hour — a bump of 3 cents.

Animals
Senate Bill 331: Cities will not be able to limit where pet stores can buy dogs for adoption. This gets rid of a law in Grove City, Ohio, that tried to prevent pet stores from using so-called puppy mills.
Senate Bill 331: Cockfighting now is considered a felony.

For motorists
House Bill 154: Motorists now have to give cyclists a three-foot clearance while passing.
House Bill 154: Drivers can now go through a stop light if it malfunctions and doesn't detect your vehicle coming to a stop. The law says after a reasonable amount of time, motorists can proceed through the stop as long as the coast is clear.
House Bill 300: A person convicted of killing someone with a car will have their license suspension begin after they get out of prison rather than during their prison sentence.

Rajon Rondo's future with the Bulls appears to be up in the air after benching - Comcast SportsNet Chicago

Rajon Rondo's future with the Bulls appears to be up in the air after benching - Comcast SportsNet Chicago

Rajon Rondo stood for plenty of moments during the Bulls’ 116-96 beating at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks, the first full game of his benching after sitting the entire second half Friday night against the Pacers.

The Bulls guard stood at his locker moments later, candidly and honestly answering questions from the media about his future — one that seems to be in doubt some 30 games into his first season as a Bull.

“Absolutely,” said Rondo when asked if he accomplished enough in the NBA for the Bulls to accommodate him on a trade or some transaction to allow him to seek another team should the benching continue.

“Gar (Forman, Bulls GM) and I will have a talk. We’ll talk tonight and go from there. I don’t know if it’s right now, maybe the next 30, 18, 45 minutes. Tonight, before ’17 (the clock strikes midnight).”

By then, one wonders if the Bulls and Rondo will be working on a buyout to free him from the remainder of his contract — one that includes a $3 million buyout that has to be exercised before next July.

“No, I’m not surprised. Not surprised,” Rondo said. “It’s been a tough season. Certain buttons are being pushed and the Bulls are trying to figure things out.”

A source told CSNChicago.com early Saturday evening a buyout hadn’t been discussed, but that was before the game and things can change quickly.

“I’m gonna explode…No, I’m not,” said Rondo when asked what he’d do if the benching continued. “I’m gonna continue to work, get some work in, play some one on one. Take care of my body, lift and give these young guys as much advice while I’m on the bench.”

On the heels of a report about Hoiberg’s job security being in question, one has to wonder if this is some preemptive strike from the coach to take more control of this operation.

“I’m Rajon Rondo, it is what it is,” he said when asked if he felt as if he was being singled out for the Bulls’ issues — a nod to his history of being difficult to deal with in Boston and Sacramento in addition to his dust-up with associate head coach Jim Boylen in Dallas a few weeks ago.

[RELATED: Bulls suffer third blowout loss to Bucks this month]

So far, it’s been 72 minutes of inactivity and Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg seems noncommittal about re-inserting his $14 million point guard back into the rotation, going with Michael Carter-Williams as starter and Jerian Grant as the backup.

“He was very professional about it,” Hoiberg said before the game. “Again, talked about doing whatever he can to help the team. I think that is very admirable for a guy that has had the type of career that he has had.”

Sounds like a statement from a coach who isn’t looking for much of an opening, a sharp contrast to their introduction over the summer when the two bonded over film sessions and early in training camp when Hoiberg allowed the likes of Rondo with Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler to stop practices to get on their teammates.

Rondo hasn’t performed too dissimilarly from his last couple seasons since his knee injury in 2013.

Shooting 37 percent and 32 from 3 makes him a hot button for criticism because the game is moving in a direction that emphasizes shooting more than ever, and he’s an awkward fit alongside Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler.

Not having other shooters around him has certainly exacerbated his weaknesses, as he hasn’t been a top-level defender in quite some time but the Bulls made him a top priority in free agency, signing him before the Wade coup even seemed feasible.

Nikola Mirotic not being able to claim the starting power forward spot in training camp made things worse for Rondo, as the spacing has been nil and if the Bulls aren’t out and running its supremely hard for Rondo to be effective.

He said he thought he would be able to have more control over calling the offense but that hasn’t been the case.

“I think, not necessarily my best year but I’m calling a pretty good year,” Rondo said. “In Sacramento I was able to do things differently but knowing coming here to play with Dwyane and Jimmy it would be different. That was okay with me. Fred and I talked in the beginning, said I would be able to call a lot of plays. The flow of the game and throughout the season things may change. Fred and I spoke and we talked about it.”

Rondo didn’t sound very hopeful about his chances of playing again, not willing to buy into the notion that this is a temporary benching, like Mirotic’s two-game break.

“Yeah. But anything can happen. I just go off actions versus the words,” he said.

Rondo acknowledged he and Hoiberg met Saturday morning at the Advocate Center to discuss the decision, with Hoiberg apparently giving the explanation that he felt Rondo looked “slow” the last five games and asked Rondo if he was healthy.

Rondo said he told his coach that it’s the best his body has felt at this point in the season in his career, obviously showing a difference in opinion in terms of evaluating his performance to date.

“No I disagree but it’s part of it,” Rondo said. “He’s the head coach and we’re gonna go with that.”

Rondo admitted his pickup point on defense could be better, when asked about what things he could do better. The Bulls obviously felt their defense is better with Rondo off the floor but Rondo feels he’s at his best when the team defense is effective — meaning he doesn’t feel like he’s the big culprit in terms of slippage.

He’s been an unlikely barometer for the Bulls in their up and down season. The Bulls were 8-2 when Rondo amassed nine assists or more but were 3-8 when he had five assists or fewer.

On the season, he’s averaging 7.2 points, 7.1 assists and 6.5 rebounds, with big games in wins over Cleveland and San Antonio, balanced out against puzzling performances against Washington, Detroit and Milwaukee.

“It goes as far as our team goes. I think I’m most effective when we get stops,” Rondo said. “I’m able to get on the break and do what I do best. If not, it comes to the slowdown game, teams load the paint and we lose.”

Hoiberg intimated he spoke with Wade and Butler about it but was adamant it was his decision, while Rondo made inferences to Boylen being part of Friday’s decision to bench him for the second half.

Either way, it’s a situation that unraveled rather quickly and it wouldn’t be surprising to see some peaceful resolution shortly after many people break their New Year’s resolutions.

The New England Patriots can clinch the top seed in the AFC playoff field with a victory this Sunday over Miami or a loss by the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots have earned five number one seeds (2014, 2011, 2010, 2007 and 2003). They are currently tied with Denver (5) with the most top seeds since the current playoff format was instituted in 1990.

New England enters this week with a 7-0 road record and will be looking to finish with a perfect road record for the second time in team history. The 2007 Patriots team finished with an 8-0 road record. Read

SERIES HISTORY

The New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins will square off for the 103rd time, including three playoff games, in their 51st year as division foes and for the for the second of two meetings in 2016. The Patriots beat Miami, 31-24, on Sept. 18 at Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots will be playing against Miami in the final regular game of the season for the second straight year and for the 14th time overall. Of those 14 games, seven of them were played in Miami, including the final game of the 2015 season. The Patriots and Dolphins are tied at 7-7 in those games but New England is 3-4 in those games at Miami.

The only other time the two teams played met on New Year's Day was on Jan. 1, 2006 in the final game of the 2005 season, a 28-26 win by Miami.

The Patriots have lost on their last three visits to Miami.

The Patriots and Dolphins have split the annual series for the last three seasons with both teams winning their home contests and losing on the road.

The Patriots have had the upper hand at home against Miami, holding a 33-17 record in games played in New England in the regular-season, including a 13-2 record at Gillette Stadium. But the Patriots are only 15-36 all-time in Miami, including two postseason games. Miami beat the Patriots at Gillette Stadium for the first time in the final game of the 2005 season, 28-26, when Patriots starting QB Tom Brady was pulled out of action after the first quarter. Miami also beat the Patriots, 38-13, at Gillette Stadium, on Sept. 21, 2008.

The Dolphins and Patriots met for the first time in 1966 and began playing twice a year during the regular season in 1967, except in 1982 during the strike year. The Patriots swept the series nine times.

The two have played three times in the postseason with New England holding a 2-1 advantage. Read
