Star Wars is a tale of intergalactic battles, futuristic mysticism and glowing laser swords, but it also charts the fortunes of a single family: the Skywalkers. Through seven films, three generations of Skywalkers have seen many highs, but even more lows - leading fans on Reddit to speculate that the Jedi clan might be cursed.
In a post discussing why Luke Skywalker disappeared between the end of Star Wars 6: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens, Redditor Snokueis suggests that the hero's disappearance may be to do with his growing concern that his family is destined to struggle eternally with the temptations of the dark side of the Force.
"I strongly believe that Luke's decision to remain on Ach-To, in self-imposed exile, has to do with the Skywalker family origin," Snokueis writes. "Finding out he and his family are essentially born from the dark side would change him forever... Maybe he believes the Skywalkers are destined to be cursed because of this."
Could this be the reason why Luke apparently hid Rey on the desert planet Jakku? Perhaps, Snokeuis says, and for good reason: he may have been trying to protect Rey - who Snokeuis believes is his daughter - from the fate that has befallen the rest of his family.
"Is Rey his daughter? Probably. Maybe after finding out about his family origin, he hid her away in the hope that she would never have to suffer the Skywalker curse," he says.
The Skywalker family history is a fairly sorry one. Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker, was born into a life of slavery on the remote planet of Tatooine. He was enslaved to a junk dealer, but was eventually freed by a Jedi named Qui-Gon Jinn who believed the young boy to be the Chosen One of Jedi prophecy who would bring balance to the Force.
After training to become a Jedi, Anakin gradually became overwhelmed by his own baser instincts and soon turned to the dark side of the Force. Challenging his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi to a duel, Anakin was cut down and left limbless and close to death. Placed in a life-supporting armoured suit, he then aligned himself with the evil Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and served as the general of the Imperial army - changing his name to Darth Vader.
Luke's history is just as fraught. Having been abandoned by his father, Luke grew up an orphan with very little knowledge of his family history. Ultimately he was drawn into the galactic conflict between the Empire and the Rebellion, and ended up having to battle and kill his own father.
Luke's sister, Leia, saw her estranged husband Han Solo killed by her son, Kylo Ren, who, like his grandfather was lured to the dark side and into the arms of the First Order.
So is averting further tragedy Luke's reason for hiding himself away for 30 years? All will be revealed when Star Wars 8 is released in December 2017.
Star Wars 8: Will we meet Darth Vader's father?

Another day, another alleged Star Wars 8 leak.
This time the latest rumour doing the rounds concerns the parentage of Darth Vader, thus solving the mystery of Luke Skywalker's hitherto unknown grandfather.
The news comes courtesy of the Star Wars Theory YouTube channel, which says a "script leak" from the next instalment of the long-running Star Wars saga has a pivotal scene in which Luke comes face-to-face with the evil Supreme Leader Snoke, the new villain introduced in last year's blockbuster, The Force Awakens.
According to the channel, Snoke implies he met Vader at one point and adds: "After all, what father doesn't see his own creation."
So could it be possible? Movie Web says "the mystery of Darth Vader's father is one that has been lingering for quite some time. In The Phantom Menace, Anakin's mother Shmi revealed that there was no biological father and that it was more of an immaculate conception sort of situation."
Of course, Snoke may be speaking of creation in a metaphorical sense rather than a literal one. Perhaps he helped turn Anakin to the Dark Side, for example.
However, if his words are meant to be taken literally, "it would at the very least fit into the theme of the Star Wars saga movies being one hell of a family drama", Movie Web says.
In other Star Wars 8 news, Making Star Wars is once again claiming that Rey's visions will play an important role in the sequel.
Her insights will reportedly give us more of a backstory for Luke and his self-imposed Jedi exile on the planet of Ahch-To.
"The sequence appears to involve Rey, Luke Skywalker, Artoo, Kylo Ren and dead bodies of youthful characters," says the website.
The sight of an inactive adult Rey at the scene means this is "probably a continuation of the flashback sequence Rey began on Takodana - Rey appears to be a bystander, making us think this is her vision of the past seen from her perspective", it adds.
The visions also seem to confirm that a number of children will appear as Luke's Padawans.
"Yes, it looks like we’ll be witnessing more of the horrible massacre at Luke Skywalker's new Jedi Temple, placing spree killing alongside patricide in Kylo Ren’s lengthening register of unforgivable crimes," says iDigital Times.
Star Wars 8 will be released in December 2017.
