When Lisa Ling and her husband, oncologist Paul Song, purchased their Santa Monica home nine years ago, the first thing they did was tear down it down.

“We wanted to build an environmentally friendly home,” Ling tells PEOPLE. “We wanted to achieve the highest level of environmental efficiency possible.” To that end, the couple made sure that every piece of the existing home was recycled or reused.

“It took three years to build because it took a long time to get the proper permits,” says Ling, who lived in a 550-square-foot studio with Song, 51, during the renovation process.

But, the final result was well worth the wait: a four-bedroom, five-bathroom, mid-century modern home, created with the help of PUNCHouse Design Group’s Marco DiMaccio. “[It’s] inspired with some Asian fusion,” Ling says in the above clip as she takes PEOPLE on a tour of her house.

“This is the focal point or center of the house – it’s our massive bookshelf,” Ling says of the furniture piece, which features the TV journalist’s “favorite fiction novels” and her husband’s “science geeky text books.”

Also on the couple’s bookshelf? A photo of Ling, 43, with former president Bill Clinton, Calif. Governor Jerry Brown and Lt. Governor of Calif. Gavin Newsom, along with Jessica Alba’s husband, Cash Warren.

“I love our bookshelves because it’s kind of a glimpse into our heads and our worlds,” explains Ling, adding that “as massive as that bookshelf is, all of the wood is from IKEA.”

In fact, “a shocking amount of stuff in our home is from IKEA products,” including, “all of the closets,” says the host and executive producer of This is Life with Lisa Ling, which airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on CNN.

The couple’s home also boasts Ling’s martial arts action figures she’s collected over the years.

“It’s really funny because I have a bunch of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan action figures,” shares Ling. “And everyone who comes into the house always says, ‘Paul! You have such a cool collection.’ I’m like, ‘That’s mine!'” she adds with a laugh.

And according to Ling, there’s one design feature that’s proven to be “the best babysitter you can ever imagine” – a fake grass pit in the front yard.

“We just throw our kids in there and they will play forever,” says Ling, who has two daughters, Jett, 3, and Ray, 4 months.

She adds: “We also had a neighborhood watch meeting, so the neighbors came and sat around it and the police chief stood in the middle. It’s just kind of a fun unusual thing.”
